In Java, Indonesia, batik has been practised for centuries. Batik is a very creative medium offering the opportunity to explore a unique process in a flexible and exciting way. The student will be taught how to create images on fabric using a wax resist method by applying wax & dye to the fabric to build up the image. This process of waxing and dyeing can be repeated to create elaborate designs full of colour, pattern and texture. This workshop includes an introduction to basic colour theory, an opportunity to experiment with ‘Tjaps’ (traditional stamps) & ‘Tjantings’ (tools for drawing with hot wax) to create a unique piece e.g. a table runner or wall hanging. Depending on weather and duration of workshop students can also create their own unique picture on cloth which can be framed or sewn up as a wall hanging later.
